2016 Corportate Luncheon set for Thursday, April 28; Dennis Bland keynote

Dennis Bland, president of the Center for Leadership Development, will be the keynote speaker at GLIBE’s 2016 CORPORATE LUNCHEON at the Holiday Inn City Centre Hotel, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The theme of the event is the Frederick Douglass quote: “It Is Easier to Build Strong Children Than to Repair Broken Men.”

Center for Leadership Development 8th Annual College Prep Conference & College Fair Aug. 22

IBE is excited to invite students and adults from IBE Chapters to participate in the Center for Leadership Development’s (CLD) 8th Annual College Prep Conference & College Fair at the Indiana Convention Center, Sagamore Ballroom, Indianapolis on Saturday, August 22, 2015, 8:00AM – 4:30 PM. This is a great opportunity for ALL students statewide in grades 8-12 (in the Fall) who are considering college and for those who have never considered attending college to receive vital information. 

 This interactive college readiness conference includes workshop sessions for students and parents on How to Study Effectively, College Testing Preparation, Applying for College, Financial Aid and Paying for College, NCAA and MUCH MORE! With over, 1,000 participants expected to attend by registration only, you are encouraged to register immediately to ensure your spot!

Registration is $10 per person for groups of 10 or more. All participants (students and adults) must register.  If you are considering taking a group of students, please send the following information to Joi Harmon at jharmon@cldinc.org or simply begin the registration process.

Back To School Rally services hundreds of family at annual event

Several hundred families came to Ivy Tech Community College Saturday, July 25 for the GLIBE’s annual Back to School Rally. The BTS Rally is the largest community event GLIBE puts on every year, giving out free book bags full of supplies to students while giving them an opportunity to engage with organizations in the community.

Organized by GLIBE youth chair Pamela Stokes, super intern Gabby White and her team of volunteers, the Back to School Rally proved to be another success for GLIBE and the community. Mayors Tony Roswarski, West Lafayette Mayor John Dennis and State Rep. Sheila Klinker also appeared. Here are some of the photos that capture the sights of this year’s BTS Rally.

Faith Killian-Fassnacht, Azaria Dunston & Sojourner Rudd Attends IBE Youth Leadership Summit

GLIBE will be well represented by three students at the Indian Black Expo Youth Leadership Summit Friday (July 17) to Sunday (July 19) at the Hyatt Regency in downtown Indianapolis.

Students representing GLIBE are Faith Killian-Fassnacht, a rising senior at McCutcheon High School; Azaria Dunston, a rising freshman at the DHS Academy (home school); and Sojourner Rudd, a rising freshman who attended Tecumseh Junior High School last year. Natasha Watkins, of Purdue University, will be chaperoning again for GLIBE.

Youth Leadership Summit is for middle and high school student leaders who want to see and affect change in their community. YLS is a youth conference geared towards giving youth a platform to hear and learn from professionals regarding academics, decision making and advocacy.

Students will engage in plenary sessions and interactive workshops with knowledge that is transferable across home, school and community. In addition to networking with youth across the state youth also become the teacher. Youth led service learning opportunities allow youth to let their voices heard through PSA’s on “Our Life Matters” and “Real Talk.”

Saturday activities close out the day with the Slam Dunk Contest, Amp Harris and Reggie Wayne Celebrity Basketball Games and an YLS White Party (invite only). IBE is committed to be a catalyst in promoting positive, relevant content to our youth for academic and social

Jesse Moore: Governor’s Award for Achievement in Civic Leadership winner!

Congratulations to GLIBE president Jesse Moore who was honored by Indiana Gov. Mike Pence at the Indiana Black Expo Summer Celebration Governor’s Reception Tuesday.

Moore, Purdue University’s Director of Supplier Diversity, won the Governor’s Award for Achievement in Civic Leadership. He was honored with nine others from around the state who were recognized by Pence for their leadership.

Come out to the Back to School Rally at Ivy Tech-Lafayette, Saturday, July 25 and meet this state award winner in person.

Duke Energy to Host Jobs Fair at Hanna Community Center July 23

Duke Energy, in partnership with GLIBE and the Greater Lafayette Commerce’s Diversity Roundtable, is hosting a jobs fair that is geared toward minority candidates from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, July 23. Duke representatives have said that they are looking to hire four to six linemen and want to make inroads into the minority community for these jobs. These jobs, according to Duke, start off at about $25 per hour and can then grow to as much as $40 per hour. GLIBE is gathering additional information and possible future partnerships with Duke. Tell anyone who you know is looking for work at great pay to attend this fair.

GLIBE looking for donations for Back To School Rally

The GLIBE will be holding its annual Back to School Rally from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 25 at Ivy Tech Community College-Lafayette, 3101 Creasy Lane. Youth chair Pamela Stokes has set a new goal of serving 500 children this year. Donation boxes are being established in various locations, including churches, for supplies such as notebooks, pens, pencils and folders. Donors also can sponsor book bags for $25 per bag. Monetary donations can be sent to P.O. Box 2761, West Lafayette, IN 47996 and the check should be made out to GLIBE. The deadline for donations is July 10.
